Aoyimti’s Journey to Clean Water: A Jal Jeevan Mission Success Story

ree

Nestled near Dimapur Airport, Aoyimti Village is a thriving community where people live in harmony. However, despite the growing population, the village struggled with a persistent water crisis for years. The scarcity of clean and accessible drinking water affected daily life, forcing residents to rely on unreliable and often expensive water sources.

The timely intervention of the Central Government through the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) changed everything. Implemented during the second phase of JJM in Dimapur District, this initiative brought a structured and sustainable water supply system to Aoyimti.

To ensure smooth execution, the villagers, under government directives and with the guidance of the Implementing Support Agency (ISA), Act Of Kindness Society (AOK), formed the WATSAN (Water and Sanitation) Committee. The Village Council entrusted this committee with overseeing JJM implementation, ensuring community participation and ownership.

With JJM funds, the village established four borewells, each strategically placed to provide equitable water access. A JJM storeroom was constructed to store tools and machinery essential for maintenance. The village employed a supervisor-cum-storekeeper and two linemen, responsible for maintaining the borewells, clearing filter blockages, and ensuring the water supply system functions smoothly. Their salaries are funded through a structured monthly billing system collected from villagers.

Ensuring Water Quality and Safety

A vital component of JJM in Aoyimti is the Water Testing Committee, composed of five trained female members. With government-provided equipment and training, these women conduct regular water quality tests to ensure the supply remains safe for consumption. They periodically submit reports to the concerned government departments.

Expanding Water Access

The JJM initiative in Aoyimti has extended beyond private households. Public health centers, Anganwadicenters, and schools in the village now have direct water connections, significantly improving hygiene and daily operations.

A Sustainable Model for the Future

The success of JJM in Aoyimti highlights the importance of structured implementation and community engagement. The Act Of Kindness Society (AOK), in its role as an ISA, facilitated community mobilization and awareness, ensuring smooth coordination between government authorities and the villagers.

Thanks to JJM and the collaborative efforts of the Village Council, WATSAN Committee, and the people of Aoyimti, the village has overcome its longstanding water challenges. Today, Aoyimti stands as an example of how structured governance, local participation, and well-planned execution can bring sustainable water solutions to communities in need.
